From my teaching experience, I found when students are not fluent or proficient with addition and subtraction facts, meaning they have not memorized math facts, they will struggle with higher level math.

If you work with students who still count to get answers to basic addition and subtraction facts, such as 8+7 and 15-9, you probably noticed this as well. These students are more likely to resist doing math practice, or say they do not like math.


To help children learn and master addition and subtraction facts: 

1. Determine which math facts are “known,” meaning the fact is answered automatically and correctly without counting to get the answer.

2. Record these facts. If you are using LP 200 Two Plus Two Is Not Five: Easy Methods to Learn Addition and Subtraction, there are record-keeping pages in the book. You can also use 3″ by 5″ cards to make a practice card for each known fact.  **Email me for a free copy of the record-keeping pages!

3. Review these facts with your child daily. Remember, your student knows these facts, so they will feel good about knowing the answers quickly!

4. Teach a few new facts each day, and add these new facts to the stack of known facts.

5. Give written practice and review as well. Two Plus Two Is Not Five has a lot of reproducible practice pages, and strategies to recall answers. Try out the sample pages in this website. Gradually, over a period of 8-12 weeks, the average student will know all the addition and subtraction facts to 18.

6. During the time you are teaching these facts, introduce new math skills, but use the students’ known facts. LP 250 Addition and Subtraction: Beyond Math Facts can be used with Two Plus Two Is Not Five. As students learn a group of addition and subtraction facts, they will be introduced to adding and subtracting with 2-, 3-, and 4-column numbers. What makes this book unique is that these problems use only the facts that the students have already learned. This leads to confidence and success.

Some examples of using known facts when teaching new skills:

After students learn the Magic 9 addition facts use these facts in the new concepts you are teaching.

(2+9, 9+2, 3+9, 9+3, 4+9, 9+4, 5+9, 9+5, 6+9, 9+6, 7+9, 9+7, 8+9, 9+8, 9+9)

Some very simple examples using the known fact 9+5 or 5+9: 

Addition regrouping   19 + 15.

Money   $9.00 + $5.00

Estimation  Estimate 89 + 52. (90 + 50) Set up problem-solving questions using known facts, and no one has to count on fingers. Students can focus on how to solve the word math problems.

Word math  There are 9 red chairs and 5 blue chairs. How many chairs in all?Use known facts when introducing other math skills.

Telling time   The boy read for 90 minutes in the morning and 50 minutes at night. How many minutes in all did he read?

Measurement   5 cm and 9 cm = ____

Fractions   5/23 + 9/23 = ____

Decimals   0.05 + 0.09 = ____

Use known facts when teaching multi-digit regrouping in addition and subtraction. As mentioned, Addition and Subtraction: Beyond Math Facts is a workbook which gives children practice adding and subtracting larger numbers. Six sections of practice problems allow students to review a different group of facts, as they transition from math facts to learn how to add and subtract with two-, three-, and four-digit problems.

I designed the book so that it can be used alone, or along with Two Plus Two Is Not Five. The facts introduced in Tier 1 of Two Plus Two Is Not Five are the first set of facts used in the new book Addition and Subtraction: Beyond Math Facts. Therefore, when learning to add and subtract with larger numbers, students will not need to count to get answers to the basic math facts.

After students learn 1 + a Number, and the Doubles 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, they will be able to learn how to regroup in problems such as

Once students complete Tier 2 in Two Plus Two Is Not Five, they will known a second set of math facts, and can then work without counting to get answers in the second section of Addition and Subtraction: Beyond Math Facts. 


For example:
After the Doubles subtraction facts 12-6 and 14-7, and Number – 1, are learned students will be able to learn how to regroup in problems such as

Addition and Subtraction: Beyond Math Facts also has six pages of word math problems which correspond to the skills taught in each of the six sections.
